Meet Ben Nelson: People skills just as important as photography

Mediamax Photographer Ben Nelson is a soft-spoken, personable guy. He’s someone you warm to easily.

He came to photography naturally, little by little, the same way he acquired his artistic skills. He’s been taking pictures, sketching and drawing ever since he can remember.

“I didn’t know it was ever going to lead to anything,” he says, “but it was just one of those things that when it finally did it made sense that I’d always been into it.”

He started out in advertising and marketing doing graphic design and computer animation. He did a stint at a 3-D design company in Manhattan. Some of his work made its way into a couple of MTV music videos.

In the mid-2000s he landed a spot with a startup real estate marketing and photography company that eventually grew to be the largest in the Tristate (New York) area. It was there he put another of his almost accidentally acquired but useful skills to work.

Years earlier, his dad, a wood shop owner, had encouraged him to learn how to read blueprints. Working as a busy real estate photographer, he figured out he could put that knowledge to work creating floor plans for his clients. Now that he’s back on his home turf in Colorado, he’s also one of Mediamax’s Floor Plan Specialists. (More about Measuring and Floor Plans here.) A versatile guy, Ben does Aerial Photography, too.

“I take a lot of pride in my photography,” he says. But his people skills are just as important to him.

“A lot of agents that I have worked with really recommended me because they knew that for any situation, any type of seller I’m going to be able to work well with them.”

As a photographer, he says it’s his job to help someone who’s never seen the home before “understand it in a beautiful way.”
